3rd Division Massachusetts Militia orders, 1802-1805.

The folder contains several documents dated 2 March 1803 to 14 May 1805 from Captain James Farrar instructing noncommissioned officers to assemble their troops. The noncommissioned officers, Henry Durant, Josiah Nelson, and Jonathan Heald, were officers of the Troop of Cavalry, 3rd Regiment, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of Militia of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They were instructed to gather at a tavern at one in the afternoon to elect a captain and a lieutenant and fill other positions in the unit.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
